  • Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAP-BAND)
Small Incisions, Faster Fullness

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is surgery to make the stomach smaller. It is done to help people lose weight. The surgery limits the amount of food the stomach can hold. This helps you eat less and feel full more quickly.

How It’s Done: Small Incisions, Camera-Guided Band Placement & Adjustable Port

LAP-BAND® is done laparoscopically through a few small (≈1.5–2.5 cm) incisions. Using a camera, the surgeon places a band around the upper stomach to create a small pouch. A thin tube connects the band to an access port under the skin, where saline can be added or removed to tighten or loosen the band.

Under an Hour, Home the Same Day
First Adjustment in 4–6 Weeks

The LAP-BAND® System procedure is often done on an outpatient basis and the surgery itself typically takes less than an hour. When the procedure is performed in an inpatient setting, the hospital stay is generally less than one day.

The band is not inflated during surgery. You will need to recover from surgery before the band is adjusted for weight loss. This is usually 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is it actually to live with gastric lap band surgery on a daily basis?

People tend to mention the major difference as peace rather than pain or limitation. You have your meal, and for the first time after a long time, hunger does not rule you. You have a small portion, and your body discreetly informs you, “You have had enough.” It is very soft, and it seems that your appetite has finally become a collaborator instead of a foe.

What is recovery honestly like when you’re back home with your normal routine?

Most people say the soreness is there, but it’s not the dramatic kind. You’re moving gently but normally. The trickier part is adjusting how you eat — taking your time, smaller bites, listening to your body. But even that becomes second nature pretty quickly. It’s more about slowing down than hurting. You’re not bedridden; you’re just being careful.

For someone getting gastric lap band surgery in New Jersey, are the follow-ups stressful?

Not at all. They’re usually quick and really relaxed. You just talk about how you’re feeling, what’s working, what’s not, and your provider adjusts the band if needed. No judgment, no pressure. People often say these visits feel like someone is walking the journey with them, instead of checking a box.

How soon do people actually see changes — like, in real life, not in brochures?

It usually starts quietly. Your clothes feel a bit nicer. You don’t get that heavy, sluggish feeling after meals. Maybe someone comments that your face looks a little sharper. It’s a steady shift — not dramatic, not scary. It feels real because it happens at a pace your body can handle.

If I'm worried about undergoing a permanent body change, is the lap band still a wise option?

To be honest, yes. That is the most reassuring aspect probably. No cutting, no removing, and later on, if you desire, the band can be taken out. It’s like a supportive step without going beyond a line that you cannot return. For many, that contributes to making the entire procedure feel easier and less intimidating.
